About Paul
Lonely Planet author since 2004, updating more than 40 guidebook titles predominantly in North Africa, the Middle East, South and Central Asia, the Caribbean and Central America. Keen advocate for travel in countries perceived as having negative reputations (for example, Haiti, Nigeria, as well as writing LP's 2007 Afghanistan guidebook), as well as decolonising apporaches to travel (most recently as lead author of LP Caribbean Islands, where we tried to contextualise tourist sites like plantation houses and increase coverage of sites of slavery remembrance). Strong interest in history - currently writing a biography of Henry Christophe, Haitian revolutionary leader and first king of Haiti – as well as local British history, having reconnected with my home city of Bristol and micro-travel on one's doorstep during the pandemic.
