With more than 1.6 million #bathroomselfie and 320,000 #bathroomgoals hashtags appearing on Instagram, it’s clear that the once-private powder room is having a very public moment.

To determine which hotel bathrooms are the world’s most Instagrammable, UK company Mira Showers kept tabs on five bathroom-related hashtags – #bathroomgoals, #bathroomsoftheworld, #hotelbathroom, #bathtubgoals, and #bathroomview – and worked out which were the most popular. Then they calculated the cost per like for each location, putting the average number of likes on the ten most recent pics of each bathroom up against the cost of a one-night stay in peak season. So which locations provide the best social-media return on your investment? Read on for more.

1. Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island, Maldives

Ringing in around £50,076 (US$65,000) per night in high season, the ultra-luxe Muraka suite at Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island, has the most expensive bathroom on the list, but because it’s so exclusive, there wasn’t enough data available to rank it properly. Instead, the team at Mira considered the Sunset Water Villa and its ocean-facing bath, which, at £7172 ($9310) in high season, costs £3.21 per like, the second most expensive on the list.

2. The Silo Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

Housed in a former grain elevator in a silo above Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town’s Silo Hotel is a scroll-stopping property. Its rooms go for £3367 (US$4377) per night, amounting to a decidedly non-budget-friendly £4.63 per like – the worst value of the bunch.

3. Punta Tragara Hotel, Capri, Italy

Perched on a cliff in Capri overlooking the Faraglioni rock formations, Punta Tragara Hotel has such a classic Italian look that you wouldn’t be surprised to see Sophia Loren coming around the corner. At £3004 (US$3905) per night, access to the bath will run you £1.64 per like, landing this petal-strewn tub directly in the centre of the pack.

4. Six Senses Zil Payson, Seychelles

Tucked away on the private island of Félicité, Six Senses Zil Pasyon has the deep soaking tub and the unobstructed water views to make an Instagram audience swoon. And with rates hitting £1948 (US$2533) per night, the cost per like is just £0.81 – surprisingly reasonable, comparatively speaking.

5. Shangri-La Hotel at the Shard, London, UK

From the 52nd-floor infinity pool (the highest in western Europe) to the marble bathrooms with walk-in rain showers, the Renzo Piano–designed Shangri-La offers unbeatable London views. Its rooms will set you back a cool £1050 (US$1365), only £0.32 per double-tap.

6. The Peninsula, Hong Kong

With harbour views and top-class amenities – guests can book the hotel yacht and get out on the water, or take the property’s helicopter to tea – the Hong Kong branch of the Peninsula has cornered the five-star market. Rates start at £995 (US$1294) in peak season, or £1.71 per like.

7. Zannier Hotels, Sonop, Namibia

Located in a nature reserve on the Southern edge of the Namibian desert, Zannier Hotels Sonop is a tented camp with one- and two-bedroom accommodations, not to mention bathrooms with full tubs, rain showers, and separate toilets, taking glamping to a whole new level. And it has the price tag to match: at £806 (US$1049) per night, each like costs £2.06, the third-highest of the lot.

8. The Udaya Resorts and Spa, Bali, Indonesia - £286 (or $372, €332)

A tub full of colourful blossoms is sure-fire Instagram bait, and the Udaya’s Celebration of Flowers doesn’t disappoint. The 45-minute spa treatment finds the tub filled to the brim with fresh blooms, and it comes free with a three-night minimum stay, so for just £286 (US$372) per night, or £0.24 per like, you’ll have followers smashing that heart with abandon.

9. The Old Piggery at Windout Farm, Devon, UK - £145 (or $189, €168)

It’s no oceanfront paradise, but the Old Piggery in Devon has its charms, not least among them its outdoor baths overlooking the Dartmoor countryside. An overnight costs just £145 (US$189) per night, making this a great value proposition at a mere £0.14 per like – the best deal on the list.
