A Quest for Parity: The Octavius V Catto Memorial

Unveiled in 2017 on the south side of City Hall, amazingly this is the first monument in the city dedicated to an individual African American. A successful activist who led the battle to desegregate Philly’s public trolleys, Catto was just 32 when he was killed on election day in 1871 while rallying African American men to vote.
